Not necessarily.
As long as you've switched to Smart Mode, you can play just fine even without the app.
Just grab a chord sheet for the song you want to play, press the corresponding frets (the first seven frets) with your left hand, and strum with your right hand.
Since Smart Mode comes with preset chords and strumming patterns, there's no need to memorize complex fingerings. Just follow the chord progression on the chord sheet, and you can easily play most songs.
