You can use third-party MIDI controllers to modulate VSTi/AU instruments' parameters- most devices can directly connect to the computer via a USB cable, while some require special interfaces.
1. MIDI Din
MIDI cables are specifically designed for MIDI signal transmission between hardware devices, and most audio interfaces include this port.
2. 6.5 TRS/TS
Most pedals feature this interface, but require connection to a MIDI keyboard or compatible hardware to control computer-based VST/AU instruments.
3. 3.5 TRS to MIDI
Most portable music devices utilize this standard MIDI interface.
4. USB to MIDI
Often used for connecting modern devices with legacy hardware.
Unlike USB interfaces, MIDI connections work immediately upon plug-in without additional drivers.
So, how do you control VST/AU instrument parameters?
4.1 Most modern software supports MIDI Learn functionality - simply right-click on any parameter, select 'MIDI Learn' from the pop-up menu, then move the controller (knob, fader, etc.) you want to assign for real-time modulation.
Note: Certain DAWs allow MIDI notes to function as toggle switches. If an incorrect mapping occurs during MIDI Learn, simply repeat the learning process to correct it.
4.2 For legacy software lacking MIDI Learn functionality, manual controller mapping must be configured directly in the application's MIDI settings panel.
